One of our favourite YHA trips ever. This is an amazing place to stay, such an experience. The castle is wonderful, the staff were so welcoming, the beds clean and comfy and even the food good too! We stayed in Chaplain's room which is at the top of some very steep stairs, all art of the experience but definitely the trickiest room to get to in the hostel! Highly recommend a trip here.
The family had a great experience staying here. The building is super interesting, and fun to explore. We stayed in a private room in the East Tower, which was comfortable and had good facilities. St Briavels YHA has a warm welcome, good self-catering facilities, and excellent breakfast and free tea and coffee, and is excellent value.
It's in the beautiful Wye valley countryside and within the village is opposite St Mary's church, which is kept open, and within 5 minutes of the village Pantry, playground and pub, all worth visiting.
I would just recommend not reading the 'haunted castle' books until the day after!
Loved everything about this place. The staff were so friendly and helpful.
Bedding, toilets, showers and kitchen are kept so clean. Top place!!
At nearly 1,000 years old it’s amazing how much of this castle is still standing. In fact some of it is actually habitable and used by the YHA. Would have loved to have stayed here! A gem for castle lovers of all sorts, tucked away in the Forest of Dean it’s very easy to overlook but it’s well worth stopping by, not least to see Saint Briavels village and do not miss a meal at the George Inn while you are there.
Where else can you stay and have a dungeon under your bedroom. Staff are interested and kind. Will be going back.
Absolutely fantastic and very unusual location for a weekend birthday event. Very comfortable beds, good kitchen and a number of areas for dining and lounging. Showers are good and for an ancient building it's remarkably warm. Parking right outside and easy to access. Grounds are currently undergoing some renovations as a wall collapsed about a year ago but they're all over it. Recommended.
Spent a single night, host and staff are friendly with a lot of knowledge about the history of the castle. Banquet was fun and entertaining, guests have option of dressing up in provided costumes, great for children. Outdoor activities were well organised. pretty much every room will have an interesting ghost story attached to them. Rooms were warm, considering how cold it was when we went. Everyone had a great time.
Stayed with my family for 3 nights, wish it could have been more. The castle is wonderful. The accomodation is excellent value for money. The staff were friendly and more. We went to the medieval banquet which was great. We also had breakfasts and an evening meal on another night, all were again excellent value for money. The kids did one of the archery sessions which they enjoyed. I've never visited this area before but will definitely return as the countryside is beautiful. Really glad we went.
